Artist bio

Bas Cuthbert has dedicated his life to capturing the beauty and essence of birds
through the lens of a camera.
Growing up in Takapuna, Bas was surrounded by many bird species, which fuelled
his curiosity and love for avian life. With the purchase of a second-hand Nikon F in
the early 70’s, Bas started documenting the birds he encountered, developing a keen
eye for detail and composition. This hobby soon turned into a serious pursuit, leading
Bas to study photography and ornithology, blending technical skills with scientific
knowledge.
Bas is also a passionate advocate for bird conservation. He has collaborated with
various environmental organisations, contributing his photographs to campaigns
aimed at protecting endangered species and preserving natural habitats. Bas
believes that photography can be a powerful tool for conservation, inspiring people to
appreciate and protect the natural world.
Today, Bas lives in Whangaparaoa where he balances his time between fieldwork
and editing hundreds of photographs. For Bas, bird photography is not just a
profession but a lifelong journey of discovery and connection with nature.
In every photograph, Bas aims to convey the wonder and beauty of birds, hoping to
inspire others to see the world through the eyes of these magnificent creatures. His
work stands as a testament to the power of photography to celebrate and protect the
natural world, one bird at a time.
Bas holds a Licentiateship with the Photographic Society of NZ, is a member of the
Royal Photographic Society. Belongs to the Fairy Tern Trust, Shakespear Open
Sanctuary, Supporters of Tiritiri Matangi and the Pukorokoro Miranda Naturalist Trust.
He regular contributes to INaturalist NZ, and his works regularly appear on Birds Auckland and NZ Photography Facebook pages.
